The incense holder “Modesty” is a beautiful collaboration between UFD and AWÜ. It’s made with a great passion for detail and pays homage to craftsmanship. Commission brief: I was approached by an excellent Shanghai interior design agency UFD in Christmas 2014 promptly after they’ve founded a new design brand Yangmayu aiming at celebrating craftsmanship and promoting affordable quality design products to the public. I had the honor to be selected as their designer/maker to work on their first product “Modesty”, an incense holder made of silver and black sandalwood. My assignment was to develop the design concept into final prototype for casting purpose as well as arrange and supervise production for the first 200 limited editions in one month. It was a difficult challenge not only due to its’ highly sculptural shape but also to the extremely tight schedule. The production completion deadline was set to the beginning of February in order to be launched before the Chinese New Year holiday, a major event in China. I was delighted to undertake the assignment and grounded myself in the studio for 10 consecutive days studying bamboo postures and making prototypes in different materials. The final result is a silver sculpture that depicts the elegant posture of bamboo resting on a fine slate of hand crafted black sandalwood. Poetic and elegant, Modesty incense holder is a perfect gift for anyone who loves simple elegance and poetic Asian touch.
